CED Agency wins CED Award
Kings
Community Economic Development Agency November 26, 1998 The Kings CED Agency finds its strength in adhering to three fundamental principles of community economic development: building partnerships; involving stakeholders at the community level; and making sure the local economy is sufficiently diversified, rather than concentrate efforts in a single industry or sector. In its role as Kings County's Regional Development Authority , the CED Agency delivers advice, counseling, training and technical assistance to volunteers, businesses and community groups working in business, tourism, agriculture and human resources development. "Kings CED is uniquely democratic and truly grass roots. The area has strengths. There are many progressive thinkers here - there always have been," says Robin Marshall, the Agency's Executive Director. The development of a partnership model for the restoration of Hall's Harbour Wharf is one of the projects that brings King's CED Agency accolades. Municipal councillor Madonna Spinazola, credits the agency with ensuring the project's success. Kings CED secured funding for an initial needs assessment for the Hall's Harbour Authority, supported local fund-raising activities, and facilitated community meetings. "Our Association was formed in 1997 and has accomplished a great deal to enrich our community environment," says Spinazola, who chairs the Hall's Harbour Community Development Association (HHCDA). " We wouldn't have been able to do it without the direction and knowledge of Robin Marshall and the Kings CED Agency." The Kings CED Agency supports a variety of other CED initiatives. Success stories include the Avonport Scenic View Park, a one hectare site with seating, interpretative panels and a beautiful panoramic view of the Minas Basin and Annapolis Valley. The Agency provided seed funding and encouragement to the Alternative Transportation Society, a service for people with special needs. And the Agency coordinates the "Retire to Kings" campaign . The campaign's goal is to draw 500 couples to the area over s five year period, and is expected to create an estimated 326 jobs and have a total economic impact of 18 million dollars.
