L.I.V.E., Halifax Nova Scotia November 26, 1998 Young people need to be involved in community development. That's Allan Waye's goal. Under Waye's direction, the Youth L.I.V.E Centre for Youth Development in Halifax, is helping young people, labeled "youth at risk," discover a pride in themselves and their community, and learn some valuable lessons about life and business at the same time. "We combine education with job skills," says Waye. "We want to build the capacity of young people to be self reliant." L.I.V.E. stands for learn, inspire, venture, experience, a name given to the project by the young people who benefit from it. "Youth L.I.V.E. offers everything from literacy and GED upgrading services to wilderness programs, but most importantly it offers understanding and opportunities," says Waye.. Through its two Halifax-based businesses, a recycling operation and an enviro depot, Youth L.I.V.E. gives its young clientele business training and community development skills. In gaining these skills and experience, young participants develop a strong sense of physical, social, intellectual and economic well being, and recognize the contribution which they themselves can make to their community. |
