Port
Bickerton and Area Planning Association November 26, 1998 The lighthouse which guards the entrance to Port Bickerton Harbour has found a new way to serve its local residents. Built in 1901, the lighthouse operated until 1980, when it was abandoned. Then in 1996, a local group calling itself the Port Bickerton and Area Planning Association, decided to restore the 49 acre lighthouse site, and create an economic opportunity for the community. With the assistance of the Guysborough RDA, Port Bickerton and Area Planning Association volunteers set in motion the restoration of the original lighthouse. Later they restored a second structure on the site, and built a series of beach and nature trails to allow visitors to explore the entire site where interpretative signs now depict the region's natural and social history. Now known as the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Interpretative Centre, the site is a showcase for the cultural, economic and social history of lighthouses in Nova Scotia. It's attracting visitors from all over the world, and to date has brought an estimated $400,000 dollars into the community. |
