For more than fifty years, Father
Jimmy Tompkins stirred up the people of Nova Scotia, pushing and prodding
and cajoling them to make a better life for themselves. Through his prompting,
study clubs, co-operatives and credits unions sprang up across the province.
Everywhere a new enthusiasm called the Antigonish Movement promised a
future in which everyone could participate. It was active and pragmatic
and democratic in spirit: education and cooperation were its tools. Father
Jimmy advocated the revolutionary doctrine that ordinary people, empowered
with ideas, could change everything...
Thus begins Father Jimmy's Heirs: A CED Album. But
this film isn't about the past; it's a 14-minute overview of the movement
that's sweeping Nova Scotia today. Father Jimmy's legacy lives on in a
tradition of hard work, cooperation and determination. It's an old concept
with a new name; C-E-D: community economic development.
