Nova Scotia's Grade 9 CED Curriculum

Nova Scotia students now have the opportunity to learn about community economic development (CED) as part of their grade nine social studies course Atlantic Canada in the Global Community. A special curriculum supplement has been developed to introduce students to the concept of CED and its place in Nova Scotia's history. It also encourages them to get involved in the development of their own communities.

Commissioned by Nova Scotia Economic Development, the curriculum was developed in cooperation with the Department of Education after CED practitioners and Nova Scotia's citizen-based Coastal Communities Network (CCN) identified young people's participation as crucial to the CED process. The curriculum was developed by John Stone, a highly respected Nova Scotia educator, and overseen by a group of CED practitioners and teachers from across the province.

Written from the required outcomes framework of Grade 9 Social Studies, the CED Curriculum is designed to:

inform students about CED, its local history and current status;
equip them with the skills and positive attitudes essential to CED initiatives; and
engage them actively in CED undertaking in their own local communities.

The curriculum provides teachers with learning, teaching, assessment and resources suggestions that aid them in the delivery of the curriculum.
